I know what profound and lasting unhappiness is like.
When I was a toddler, my parents abandoned me to the foster system in Illinois, and I grew up with a lot of turmoil, depression, and anger. Luckily, I had a (fairly) stable foster home with a lot of love and laughter, so I was also taught optimism and resiliency. Some of the most profound lessons I took from childhood I learned from my foster sisters Linda, who was 20 years older than me and had Multiple Sclerosis. The disease took her ability to walk, work, start a family, and live a "normal" life. It finally took her life in 2006. It never took her sense of humor and zest for life, though.
In the late 1980's I was a teenager going through a bad time, and Linda gave me her secret. Something that I have taken with me ever since. She told me:
"MS has taken one of my legs, my ability to walk, and eventually will take my mind and life. But no matter what happens with this disease, nothing can take my laugh away."
I have carried that optimistic and positive message with me ever since. I have tried to live my life with laughter and humor. I'll admit, I've not always been successful, but I've tried.
I have spent the past 25 years of my life in public leadership and management, including military school and service in the U.S. Marine Corps. After my service, I began working for the municipal government in parks and recreation, culminating in my position as the Parks and Recreation Director for the Fairbanks North Star Borough in Fairbanks, Alaska.
In 2016, I earned my Master's degree in Industrial & Organizational Psychology and began exploring Positive Psychology, workplace happiness, and the power of non-humor based laughter.
When I discovered the power of unconditional laughter (laughter just for the pleasure of laughing); and the ability to purposefully create happiness through unconditional laughter, I knew I had found something special.
Something that Linda would have identified with. Something I KNOW she would have loved!
To that end, I have become a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, who travels the world training people on how to harness something inherently good like laughter and create purposeful and meaningful happiness.
My message is easy to understand, and my mission is simple: "Spreading Mirth on Earth!"
